2011 — UVM professor Emily Bernard looks at the power and potential of interracial friendships in a talk at Ilsley Public Library in Middlebury on November 2, 2011. Her talk, “Some of My Best Friends: The Power of Interracial Friendship,” is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series.


2011Marlboro College hosted Emily Bernard for a Black History Month lecture based on her forthcoming book, “Carl Van Vechten: A Life in Black and White.” Bernard, a professor English and Ethnic Studies at UVM, used friendships between artists of the Harlem Renaissance such as Langston Hughes and white patron Carl Van Vechten as a basis for discussion about whether contemporary society is “post-racial” as some people claim.

2010 – As part of the Profile series, Fran Stoddard, from Vermont Public Television, talks with Emily Bernard, Professor of English and Ethnic Studies at UVM, about class and how it complicates racism in America.
